AWARD FOR CHARITY IN ACTION
Behold, my children. The heritage I leave you
Have charity for one another
Guard humility; make treasure out of voluntary poverty,
Last will & Testament of St. Dominic
The award reflects VISIONS ongoing commitment to families in need as well as our roots in the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor. Their charism, mission and vision are the roots of VISIONS Community Services.
In 1879 Mary Walsh who was a member of the Third Order of St. Dominic was moved by the needs of families in her community, the lower East side of New York. In addition to her work as a laundress she began to care for families and provide some material assistance. She was supported in this work by the generosity of wealthier families and other women who shared her commitment to put charity in action by providing direct services to the poor.
The Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor came to Cincinnati in 1926 at the request of Archbishop John T. McNicholas, OP. They opened a mission in the West End and began providing health and human services to the poor. They formed an auxiliary of lay men and women who supported them in their work through fund raising and other services.
In 1982 the agency incorporated as a non-denominational not for profit organization. The founding spirit continues in VISIONS Community Services. A combination of early childhood education and support services for parents enable poor families to break out of the cycle of poverty.
This distinctive award is given to those who exemplify the values of VISIONS Community Services and their Dominican roots by serving their communities and those in need, demonstrating a belief in the uniqueness and dignity of each person and living out strong family values. It recognizes those who have worked to create a better community and a have a vision for the future.
